About GlobeMed at Cornell
Our mission.
GlobeMed at Cornell is a student organization that advocates for global health equity. On campus, we seek to educate students on global issues and raise money for our partner, AMMID (The Association Maya-Mam to Promote Research and Development).
Our project.
We support three projects with AMMID:

1. Provide ecological water filters to help prevent severe gastrointestinal issues that local children suffer from as a result of contaminated water.

2. Provide families with functioning stoves and improve sanitary cooking conditions.

3. Support family gardens to combat the malnutrition that 78% of children in the area suffer from.
Our partnership.
AMMID seeks to promote the social, cultural, political, economic and environmental development of the Maya-Mam community in Comitancillo, Guatemala. In Comitancillo, the native Maya-Mam communities are struggling with poverty, malnutrition, gender inequality, and a loss of cultural identity. AMMID is working to address these problems by providing alternative solutions that will create a self-sustaining community. They are specifically looking for women and children to benefit from equality and health education.
Every summer, members of our chapter visit the Mayan-Mam community for a GROW (grassroots on-site work) internship to evaluate our progress, develop and strengthen our partnership with AMMID, and learn from grassroots leaders. For summer 2019, our GROW team is Amy Chen, Rebekah Kang, Richa Parikh, and Shalini Gundamraj.
